New York University Abu Dhabi
Assistant Professor, DivISION of social science
Andy studies institutions, bureaucracy, and political behavior in Africa, with a focus on Kenya. Recently completed work with Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission probes the sources of inequality in voter registration with an aim to equalize access to the ballot box. He is currently designing and implementing a randomized control trial on the administration of justice in Kenya's magistrates courts, piloting interventions designed to improve the quality and speed of legal processes and judgements. Past work developed novel measurement strategies for difficult to measure concepts like political violence (via satellite data), ethnicity (using person-names from the voter register), and electoral fraud (using demographic methods to detect ballot stuffing). Andy's research draws on a wide variety of evidence, from archival records and interviews to randomized control trials and satellite data.
